One week to the Emmys! 👏🏽
Something I’m so pleased about with this writing nomination is that it is drawing attention to an episode I hope everyone will watch.
On the surface it’s about a topic that can be complicated for Native people – the Thanksgiving holiday. But it’s also about something that was stolen from us for too long – the right to celebrate as a community and culture. It’s about communal grief and it’s about Elders teaching youth, and youth bringing hope to Elders.
The first story in this is Princess Daazhraii Johnson’s “Truth, Trust, and Harvest,” a true story of Thanksgiving from an Indigenous perspective long absent in our children’s television space. The second is my “Thanks-For-Giving,” in which, at Trini’s first Thanksgiving in Qyah, she’s surprised to learn Grandpa Nat doesn’t celebrate on Thanksgiving, but recognizes it as a day of mourning.
I hope you will watch these stories and share them. Whether the story wins an Emmy or not, an awful lot of people worked to bring some beautiful and needed storytelling to the world, and I’m so proud of all of us.
