Vera has been writing and editing in the field of journalism since she was fourteen years old, starting at Dimond High School’s school newspaper, moving on to become editor of the Rolling Thunder school newspaper at East Anchorage High School.

Her first professional newspaper editing role was for the Reno Sagebrush, first as Copy Editor, and then Assistant News Editor.

After six years of editing the Anchorage Native News for Southcentral Foundation, she became editor of First Alaskans Magazine in 2014, and continued in that position until 2024.
