Of the many actions you could take on the complex issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, a simple but collectively powerful one is how you can engage with media reports on MMIW.
One of the many root causes to the issue is that not as much attention is paid to Native women when we are harmed or go missing as non-Native women – including attention from media sources.
So how can you help that?
Simply put, engage with ANY media about harmed, murdered, or missing Native women. That might be questioning how it is covered, asking for more information in comments, or simply reading and sharing what does come out in the media. Like, Dislike, Comment, Share.
This may seem a small thing individually, but if media sees that covering these stories more, and reporting them in more accurate ways, drives more numbers to their websites and social media, they’re more likely to up their coverage. This is a small action by a single person that if done by many in the community can make a real difference.
