I don’t have any kids so why do I have so many picture books?
Because I unapologetically know they stand on their own two feet in regards to quality and storytelling and someone’s appreciation of art.
More than that, so many picture books marry both visual and literary art in a wonderful, whimsical way adults can too often think they’re not allowed to enjoy any more. Of course quality and storytelling varies as with any books, but I’ve been captured by so many picture books that are a poem set to beautiful images, or stories full of metaphor that any age can enjoy.
In any case, it is “Children’s Book Week,” but I find myself defending the picture book as more than “just for kids.” Consider it a coffee table book maybe, but in more digestible size.
Whether you are introducing a child to beautiful or funny or thoughtful art, or you’re perusing the stories for yourself, I hope this will be a week to find a new picture book to enjoy.
